New wellness center
CARLSBAD — Tri-City will introduce a new WellnessCenter in early 2009. The 60,000-square-foot Wellness Center will offer members a wide variety of exercise options from weight training equipment, an Aquatic center with a 25-meter lap pool, exercise and therapy pools including the HydroWorx 2000, personal training, pilates and group exercise studios. Lund Team goes green
CARLSBAD — The Lund Team continues to focus on sustainability and being “green” with Garrett Lund finishing the rigorous requirements as a certified Eco-Broker. It is a multi-course program that teaches energy efficiency, sustainable design and healthier environments. The Lund Team moved into their “green office” design in January that won honors for being the green technology advocate by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. CARDIFF-BY-THE-SEA — Bodywear Boutique celebrated the grand opening of its second store in the Seaside Marketplace at 2027 San Elijo Ave. on Sept. 25. Scripps in town
CARLSBAD — H.G. Fenton Company and Scripps Health celebrated the grand opening of Scripps Coastal Medical Center, the new home of Scripps Health’s first medical offices in Carlsbad on Oct. 13, at 2176 Salk Ave. Opening Oct. 20, it will be home to eight family and internal medicine physicians and one nurse practitioner, with plans to add pediatricians later this year. The 40,000-square-foot medical office development of H.G. Fenton Development Company that was built for Scripps, the project’s exclusive tenant.


New principal
CARLSBAD — Tim Evanson has been named Assistant Principal at Calavera Hills Middle School. He also serves in a special education support role for the district. Evanson joined CUSD in 2007, initially teaching at the Carlsbad Village Academy. Prior to his appointment on Sept. 29, he taught special education at Carlsbad High School, where he continues to spend one half-day per week offering administrative support to CUSD’s Special Education Department.


Teacher of Year
ENCINITAS — The Encinitas Rotary Club honored kindergarten teacher Jennifer Carlson as Flora Vista’s Teacher of the Year. As part of the Encinitas Union School District for the past 10 years, Carlson has served on the district’s Strategic Planning Committee and the Benchmark Committee, as well as Flora Vista’s School Site Council. Carlson, who has 23 years of elementary education experience, was nominated for her devotion to her students.


Van Betten joins group
NORTH COUNTY — Grubb & Ellis|BRE Commercial real estate brokerage announced former Cushman & Wakefield senior broker Thomas Van Betten has joined the company as a sales and leasing specialist within the firm’s Office Specialty Division. Van Betten has more than 16 years experience in the commercial real estate industry and most recently served a director for Cushman & Wakefield Brokerage Services.


Stewart is artist of month
ENCINITAS — Bruce Stewart will have his paintings and photography displayed until mid-November at St. Tropez Bakery & Bistro, 947 S.Coast Highway 101. He recently opened the One Ocean Art Studio at 510 Second St. A portion of all sales will go to Photocharity that supports The Storefront shelter for homeless teenagers.


Wakeboard fun
CARLSBAD — The Spy Optic/Sport Chalet wakeboard boat sweepstakes ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Carlsbad Lagoon. Grand prize winner Janet Mendoza from Long Beach will be presented with a Nautiques 210 Team Edition wakeboard boat, a 2007 DHM trailer, and a Liquid Force Wakeboard. Guest Spy Optic pro wakeboarder Melissa Marquardt will be on site for the event.


Designer wins top honors
ENCINITAS — Caroline Loisos, an Encinitas-based residential building designer, has swept two prominent design awards competitions for her work transforming nondescript San Diego County residences into Craftsman and contemporary style homes. Loisos won seven awards for her entries in the American Institute for Building Design’s annual awards competition. She also won two first-place awards in the institute’s national awards competition. Loisos’ awards involved several different remodeling projects, including transforming a 1960s home in Leucadia into a coastal Craftsman-style bungalow and changing a typical 1980s tract home in Encinitas into a Craftsman style home. DEL MAR — The Jennifer Adams Design Group is hosting an open casting call for a new “design related” reality television program that the company will be involved in. An open casting call has been made for a licensed relationship therapist to appear regularly on program. The producers are searching for an individual between the ages of 20 to 45 with knowledge of art or housing design. Plaza party
OCEANSIDE — Ocean Ranch Plaza, at the intersection of Rancho Del Oro Road and Ocean Ranch Boulevard, will host a grand opening from noon to 8 p.m. Oct. 24. At 4 p.m., Mayor Jim Wood will officiate a ribbon cutting ceremony, featuring a performance by the El Camino High School Marching Band. From 5 to 8 p.m., there will be music and children’s entertainment and Halloween treats.A raffle will be held, with prizes from each of the merchants. Proceeds will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and to the El Camino High School music department.
